The 2020 election season brings about new challenges for voters due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Fewer voters plan to visit the polls on election day and growing numbers are planning to either vote by mail or vote early. Many states have implemented new ways for ballots to be submitted. The challenge is to make that information accessible to as many voters as possible.
Build a national, non-partisan polling place locator with results for election day, early voting, and ballot drop-boxes with clear data displayed for as many states and districts as possible across the country. A product that works for the VoteAmerica site and that presents itself clearly when embedded into most designs on the web.
We knew from the onset that we were building a polling place locator offering results for early voting, ballot drop-boxes, and election day locations. Early ideation and wireframing yielded options from which we were able to choose then refine. Eventually certain alerts and notices had to be incorporated and we also added sharing options.

Once the product had been coded and was functional I worked with developers at Vote America to refine the design. Visual design and layout needed fine tuning and certain alerts and notices needed to be displayed without cluttering things. Inconsistency from state to state in the data we recieved made it a bit of a challenge to accomplish readable architecture within each result. In the end we were able to find a method that worked acceptably across those variables without having to parse data from each state.
